<H3>ANOTHER NO-HITTER:</H3>
<P>
Lynchburg righthanders John Dillinger and Jason Pfaff teamed up to no-hit the 
Kinston Indians in the Tribe’s home park Wednesday, July 26. It was the Carolina 
League’s fifth no-hitter of the year.
<P>
Dillinger, started and went the first seven innings, allowing 5 walks and hitting a 
batter. He struck out one. Pfaff went the final two innings striking out two and 
walking none. The Hillcats won 4-0. First baseman Reed drove in all four runs 
with a double and a home run.
<P>
Before this season there had not been a no-hitter in the League since 1992.

<CENTER><IMG SRC="howe.gif"><H3>Players of the Week</h3></CENTER>	
Each week Howe Sportsdata International, the official statistician of the Carolina 
League selects a batter and a pitcher of the week from games Friday through 
Thursday.  The co-batters of the week are first baseman Nate Holdren of Salem 
and catcher Reed Secrist of Lynchburg.  The pitcher of the week is lefty Tim 
Byrdak of Wilmington.
<P>
Holdren, 23, from Richland WA, was selected in the 16th round of the June 1993 
Free Agent Draft by the Rockies.  He spent last year in Asheville where he batted 
.236 and tied for the SAL lead in homers with 28.  Currently with the Avalanche 
he is batting .260 with 11 home runs.
<P>
Secrist, 25, is spending his second week in a row as a CL batter of the week.  He 
was signed by the Pirates as a free agent in June 1992.  With the Hillcats he is 
batting .337 with 17 homers and leads the CL in Slugging percentage at .603.
<P>
Byrdak, 21, who resides in Oak Forest IL, was selected in the fifth round of the 
1994 June Free Agent Draft.  In his rookie season in Eugene he finished with a 4-5 
record  with 77 strike outs and an 3.07 ERA.   In his second minor league season 
he is fourth in CL pitchers with a 7-4 record and a 2.28 ERA.

<B>DURHAM</B>...SS LOU BENBOW committed three errors, including two on 
consecutive ground balls in the sixth inning, in a 6-0 loss to Frederick July 25...OF 
WONDERFUL MONDS hit .125 (6-48, 17 SO) in 14 games July 7-26. Among 
those hits was a game-winning, 12th-inning RBI single which defeated Frederick 4-3 July 
26...Despite allowing three runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Bulls rallied for 
three in the bottom of the inning, beating Wilmington 8-7 on 1B RANDALL 
SIMON'S RBI single July 23.

<B>FREDERICK</B>...The middle infield struggled badly in July as SS DAVID LAMB 
hit .057 (2-35, 6 SO) in 11 games July 10-26 and 2B JESSE GARCIA went 4-for-
47 with 11 strikeouts in 18 games July 1-26...OF HARRY BERRIOS hit home 
runs in back-to-back wins over Winston-Salem July 22 & 23...OF TROVIN 
VALDEZ extended his RBI drought to 51 games and 164 at-bats through July 
26...RHP CALVIN MADURO was 4-0, 1.60 ERA in five starts June 30-July 23.

<B>KINSTON</B>...RHP JEFF SEXTON (6-2, 2.19 ERA) was promoted from 
Columbus and got a no-decision July 25 against Lynchburg (8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 
1 BB, 6 SO)...DH BRUCE AVEN struck out five times in a 13-9 loss to Salem 
July 23...RHP JAY VAUGHT threw a two-hit, 1-0 shutout against Salem July 22 (7 
IP, 1 BB, 5 SO)...RHP KRIS HANSON allowed two earned runs or fewer in five 
consecutive starts June 23-July 21 (27.1 IP, 22 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 13 SO),
going 1-1...SS ENRIQUE WILSON hit .133 (4-30, 3 SO) in seven games July 12-
21.

<B>LYNCHBURG</B>...OF CHARLES PETERSON went 5-for-6 with a homer and 
seven RBI in an 18-6 win at Prince William July 24...DH REED SECRIST hit .500 
(13-26, 3 2B, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 1 SB) in seven games July 16-26 to earn
Player-of-the-Week honors....RHP JOHN DILLINGER (7 IP, 5 BB, 1 SO) and 
RHP JASON PFAFF (2 IP, 0 BB, 2 SO) combined on a no-hitter in a 4-0 win at 
Kinston July 26...3B RAUL RODARTE hit .588 (10-17, 2 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI) in
four games July 21-24.

<B>PRINCE WILLIAM</B>...LHP STEVE WORRELL allowed no runs in seven 
consecutive games June 23-July 22 (12.2 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 11 SO), picking up a win 
and a save...OF MAGGLIO ORDONEZ hit .098 (5-51, 9 SO) in 15 games July 2-
21...LHP TODD RIZZO allowed no runs in four consecutive games July 12-24 (9 
IP, 3 H, 6 BB, 10 SO)...LHP RICH PRATT threw seven scoreless innings (3 H, 0 
BB, 4 SO) in a 3-0 win against Lynchburg July 23.

<B>SALEM</B>...RHP BRENT CROWTHER tossed a four-hitter, but lost 1-0 at Kinston 
July 22 (6 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO), his third straight losing start...C JASON 
SMITH (0-20, 10 SO) and DH FORRY WELLS (0-16, 7 SO) were both
slumping while OF JOHN GIUDICE, after going 1-for-19, broke out with home 
runs in back-to-back wins over Salem July 23 & 24.

<B>WILMINGTON</B>...LHP TIM BYRDAK won four straight starts July 6-26 (26 IP, 
13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 26 SO), including eight scoreless innings (3 H, 1 BB, 9 
SO) in a 4-0 win against Winston-Salem...LHP JOSE ROSADO allowed two
earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts June 30-July 25 (27.2 IP, 29 H, 8 R, 
7 ER, 7 BB, 20 SO), going 2-2...OF RAUL GONZALEZ hit safely in eight 
straight games (8-31, 1 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) July 12-25, although his average 
dropped from .271 to .269.

<B>WINSTON-SALEM</B>...RHP JASON ROBBINS went 5-0, 3.38 ERA in eight 
starts May 21-July 25 (45.1 IP, 34 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 20 BB, 27 SO)...C JOHNNY 
BESS hit .022 (1-45, 17 SO) in 15 games June 29-July 26 to drop his average 
under .200...2B CHAD AKERS hit .355 (11-31, 4 2B, 10 RBI, 5 SB) in nine games July 
10-22...2B DEE JENKINS went 22 games and 44 at-bats without an RBI June 15-
July 25.
